Akira Toriyama’s comic Dragon Ball ran in the magazine Weekly Shonen Jump from 1984 to 1995. The first animated series, bearing the same title, aired from 1986 until 1989, and covers the childhood of the main hero Goku. In 1989, Dragonball Z started airing in Japan, and ran until 1996. While Dragonball Z was a continuation of the story line presented in Dragon Ball, it was launched as a new anime in an attempt to break away from the series’ earlier style and leave behind the cuter character design and rounded linework in favour of a darker and more mature style to reflect the changing content of the comic.
Toriyama added the ‘Z’ to the name of the animated series to reflect that this would be the final part of his manga, since he felt he was running out of ideas and it was time to bring the series to an end. However, as it turned out, the story of DBZ would actually account for the largest part of the original comic, covering 325 chapters of what would eventually become a 519-chapter manga. DBZ introduced new characters who would become lasting icons of the franchise, such as Vegeta, Trunks, Gohan and Goten. And while some older characters like Piccolo and Krillin remained part of the main cast of Team Z, other heroes from the original series such as Yamcha, Tienshinhan, Chiaotzu quickly faded from the main action.
