Today’s Halloween festivities are a strange mish-mash of elements drawn from these and other traditions. The celebration of the harvest season continues in the focus on sweets and sharing food. It was also thought that on this special night, the borders between the word of the living and the world of the dead were less stable. This meant that spirits could cross over. Bonfires, disguises, and special rituals were necessary to ward off evil spirits, placate wandering souls, and protect people and livestock.
